Granollers, with an area of about 15 km2 and a population of about 60,000 inhabitants (2012), is the capital of Vallès Oriental and occupies the center of the valley of the river Congost. Despite its agricultural base, the town's economy is essentially industrial. Its industrial development has been compounded by a noticeable residential growth for first and second homes. Granollers, and other neighbouring municipalities as Mollet and Parets tend to form a conurbation in the region, while the population of smaller nuclei and the traditional settlement of houses tends to disappear.
