In July 2011 it is the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (BMA). The BMA is the new institutional organization of the large urban conurbation forming Barcelona and 35 other municipalities in their immediate environment and replaces three existing metropolitan institutions that date.
The new legal framework consolidates and streamlines administration and reinforced metropolitan new skills, particularly in terms of spatial planning and urbanism. The AMB formulate the metropolitan urban master plan and the development plan for metropolitan planning, which will replace the current PGM since 1976. The new competencies are added to the cohesion and territorial balance, housing, transportation and mobility, water cycle, waste and environment that were already deploying metropolitan entities since its inception in 1987.
